Tool sharpening and fettling weekend

A well set up plane.
Course Details:
Duration: 2 Days
Maximum students: 4
Cost: £240
Course dates for 2012:
March 31st-April 1st 9.00am-5.00pm
October 20th-21st 9.00am-5.00pm
Course Description:
It is said that bad workmen blame their tools, and to a certain extent they may be justified, as bad workmen usually do not know how to treat their tools. It is impossible to do good work in cabinet making without exquisitely sharp and finely set up tools. They allow greater control and are also safer to use. The tool sharpening part of the course will show you how to get a fine edge on:
Different sharpening media will be explained, including the flattening of stones, and there will be an opportunity to try various honing guides just in case you can't get the hang of freehand honing! You will be able to use the different media and guides which will help in deciding which is for you.
We will then go into more detail on different types of planes and their uses. You will go on to explore fettling and setting up the bench plane for optimum performance. This will be particularly useful to those wanting to refurbish an old plane and will include:
A fully illustrated handout is provided on CD. Having completed this course you will be able to concentrate on the skills of the craft rather than constantly battling with deficient tools.
Course dates can be found at the top of the page or on the course calendar. If you would like more information or wish to book a place please go to the contact page or use the details below. Chris is happy to discuss course details at any time.
