Course description:

Many people aspire to making their own kitchen. If done right you can have a great looking hand made kitchen at a fraction of the price, plus you have the “I made this” sense of achievement.

On this course you will build a kitchen cabinet to fit into a particular shaped opening. This will involve both laying out using pencil and board and also computer aided drawing using the Google sketchup package. You will then make the cabinet in mdf with biscuited and dominoed joints. Then you make two different doors for the cabinet, a flat door hung on concealed sprung hinges and a frame and panel door fitted in frame with solid brass butt hinges. Finally you will fit a premade oak draw using Blum concealed drawer runners.

This will give you experience in the following cabinet making skills:

  • Taking accurate measurements
  • Taking and drawing a rod
  • Use of Google sketchup
  • Drawing up a cutting list
  • Cutting panels to size on the saw bench
  • Jointing panels using biscuits and/or dominoes
  • Assembling a carcase
  • Fitting a scribing strip
  • Lipping a flush door
  • Fitting a flush door using concealed sprung hinges. This includes interpreting the rather obtuse specifications for these hinges!
  • Making a front frame for a cabinet either dominoed or mortice and tenon
  • Making a frame and panel door
  • Hanging a door using butt hinges
  • Fitting a drawer using under mounted soft close drawer runners
  • Fitting a drawer front using adjustable mountings

A lot to get through, that’s why this course lasts six days. You will end up with a completed cabinet approximately 600mm wide with a drawer and two door options. More importantly you will leave with the knowledge and skills to avoid many of the pitfalls that the inexperienced are prey to when making their first kitchen.
