In another article I described a jig to cut very large dovetails on the band saw. However the band saw is also useful when you have a lot of smaller dovetails to cut perhaps for a batch of drawers. In this short article I describe a time saving technique for doing this.

Will came on my Basic Woodwork Skills part two course. During the course we make a small table or stool, and there is the option to vary the size within limits. Will decided on a coffee table, another student made a bench stool.

The top of Will’s table is oak and the legs poplar, which is good for painting. After the course Will finished the top with Danish oil and painted the legs a fetching grey.

Four days, usually Friday - Monday Many beginners to woodwork become frustrated because they lack the three essentials of the craft, really sharp tools, good technique and finally accuracy. This course is designed as an introduction to these essentials. You will learn how to get your planes and chisels exquisitely sharp, some basic woodworking techniques such as planing and sawing square and joint cutting, and in the process find out why precision is so critical. Once these elements are in place you can begin to enjoy the craft instead of struggling with the basics.
