Furniture making holiday

Course Details:
Duration: 5 days
Maximum Students: 5
Cost: £790 (including accommodation)
Course date for 2012:
August 6th-10th 9.00am-5.00pm
Course Description:
This is a very special event combining the challenge of an intense furniture making course with the relaxation of a holiday in the Yorkshire Dales. It's specially designed for those who want to combine the challenge of making, the stimulation of guided visits to two of the finest stately homes in the north of England, fine food and luxury accommodation, all in the backdrop of the Yorkshire Dales.
The week is based around the making of a fine marquetry tea tray. You will create a 28 flute motif in sycamore and mahogany veneer, this will be inlayed into a burr walnut background then laid onto a walnut substrate. This will be shaped and laminated curved walnut sides applied. Finally you will apply an oiled finish to the tray.
During the week we will visit two local stately homes, Temple Newsam and Harewood House. We are lucky to have secured the services of the renowned marqutarian and writer, Jack Metcalfe, to act as a guide to the furniture in these houses. Jack is an expert on the marquetry of Thomas Chippendale, much of whose work is on show at the houses. Jack's book "The Marquetry Course" is a standard work for those interested in the subject. He is shortly to publish an investigation into the marquetry techniques used by Chippendale.
Accomodation is provided by The Hopper Lane Hotel, about 20 minutes walk from the workshop. This recently renovated country hotel also provides evening meals (evening meal not included in course cost). Lunch will be provided by Mackenzies Smokehouse Restaurant, next door to the workshop. To while away your evenings in this beautiful landscape we can even provide details of local walks!
