Course Description:

This course is an opportunity for you to get to grips with cutting accurate dovetails and creating perfectly fitting drawers, the sort that push the other drawers out as you push one in!

We will make a small box of two drawers, suitable for storing writing materials perhaps. You will joint the carcase, learning the importance of an accurate drawer opening. Then you will make the drawers using through and lap dovetails. Cedar of Lebanon drawer bottoms will be fitted using drawer slips. Finally you will fit the drawers to create a piston fit.

This will not be a kit assembly exercise. You will prepare the parts to dimension and cut all joints. The emphasis will be on care, method and accuracy.

The course will introduce you to:

  • Simple carcase construction for fine fitting drawers.
  • Hand cutting through dovetails.
  • Hand cutting lap dovetails.
  • Construction of false lap dovetails using 3mm saw cut veneer.
  • Fitting solid wood drawer bottoms using drawer slips.
  • Fitting vertical grain drawer stops.
  • Precise drawer fitting to achieve a fine fit.
