Course Description:

The emphasis of my weekend courses is on skills acquisition. There is not time in two days to make anything meaningful. This four day course gives the freedom to teach the skills based around the making of a piece of furniture.

The four day course is structured on the two weekend courses; sharpening and fettling and jointing (beginners). Covering the same topics we will make a simple occasional table in oak. There will be scope to amend the basic design to your requirements eg changed dimensions or timber.

Techniques covered include:

  •  Edge tool sharpening and fettling to get best performance.
  •  Planing and sawing square using hand tools and machines.
  •  Mortice and tenon jointing by hand and using the hand held router and router table.
  •  Tapering legs using band saw and thicknessing jig.
  •  Edge jointing boards.
  •  How to allow for expansion and contraction of timber.
  •  Assembly and glue up.

This will be a very hands on event with emphasis on the needs of the student. Detailed illustrated handouts will be provided on CD.

Student comment:

"I would like to thank you for all the advice and help you have given me on my furniture making journey, the 5 day beginner furniture course was an amazing experience which I would recommend to anyone. For me to have come on the course with no skills at all and to have left with that beautiful table still astounds me".
