About Chris Tribe furniture courses

Picture of Chris Tribe
Chris Tribe has taught furniture making for about twenty years at various colleges in West and South Yorkshire, and gained a PGCE in adult education in 2005. He now offers woodwork courses from his fully equipped workshop at Blubberhouses in North Yorkshire. As a working furniture designer/maker and teacher Chris believes both his practice and his students benefit from the combination. Teaching encourages him to question his methods at the bench while his making ensures his teaching is never stale. To see more of Chris's work go to his furniture site www.christribe.co.uk.

His courses cover  many aspects of the craft including tool sharpening and fettling, jointing  (traditional mortice and tenon and dovetailing), marquetry, drawer fitting, wood finishing and kitchen cabinet making

Teaching, usually in small groups of no more than four, is essentially student centred. There is a mix of two day weekend events with occasional four day long weekend courses; during the summer additional longer courses are offered. During the weekend courses the emphasis is on skills acquisition rather than completing a particular project; you may not leave the course with a piece of furniture but you will definitely leave with the necessary skills to make one. On the four day and longer courses teaching is based around a particular project. Occasional one day and half day taster courses may also be offered, these are designed as a brief introduction to a particular technique or aspect of the craft. On all the courses you will learn the importance of accuracy and method.

Student comment:
"The course more than fulfilled the aims and my expectations. Chris has an excellent approach to passing on his expertise and I also valued the way he valued the contributions from the students. Learning takes place in a relaxed but focused and supportive atmosphere and we all learnt the necessary skills and techniques to produce the table by the end of the course. Nothing seemed too much trouble for Chris to vary the programme in order to meet student needs".
